Two by Two is excited to be part of IBM’s Employee Charitable Contribution Campaign Event on September 28, 2011. Being a nonprofit, it is always enjoyable to educate a new audience, especially when our visions are on the same path…IBM working for “a smarter planet” and Two by Two working for “a kinder planet.” To educate YOU, a new blogger to Two by Two, here is why and how we are helping our planet be a kinder one.

Why Do We Need Two by Two?

In the last two decades, our children have become surrounded by a world of violence, as documented so tragically in the following three cases:
• April 20, 1999—Columbine High School Shooting
• January 15, 2010—Phoebe Prince Commits Suicide Due to Bullying
• January 8, 2011—US Congresswoman Shot at a Tucson, AZ Shopping Center

Research indicates:
• Our youth have become a ME, ME, ME generation.
• Youth violence is a high-priority concern in every sector of the U.S. society. Many violent crimes start with animal abuse and dog-fighting. When children become desensitized to violence they can criminalize and perpetuate the cycle of violence toward humans.
• Kids who are obese, gay, or have disabilities are up to 63% more likely to be bullied than other children.

Many of our children are growing up without morals, values and a strong foundation of good character. They are growing up without character education. Dr. Thomas Lickona, author of Educating for Character, stated, “Good character is not formed automatically; it is developed over time through a sustained process of teaching, example, learning and practice. It is developed through character education.” Thomas and Beirne also state, “Children exposed to humane education programs display enhanced empathy for humans and other living creatures.”

How Do We Become a Kinder Planet?

Two by Two has created curricula based on 21st Century education standards—the skills students need to succeed in work, school and life. By combining character and humane education curriculum, Two by Two is helping children develop pro-social behaviors: helping them grow into empathetic, responsible, and productive citizens who care for people, animals, and the environment.
